The battery life is superb, without even trying to save energy. You can leave the GPS, 1-second sampling and Bluetooth on the whole time when engaged in an activity and not notice any rapid drain on the battery.
Battery lifetime: Up to 50 hours in UltraTrac mode; up to 20 hours in GPS training mode.
The Garmin Fenix 3 GPS multisport watch is very much activity orientated; Walking, Hiking, Running, Swimming, Triathlon and any number of others. It really is first class, it includes all navigational tools you could ever want: altimeter, compass, GPS (and/or Glonass) tracking, heart rate monitoring with an external chest strap(though you need to calibrate the altimeter before setting off).
Whilst setting up your watch, you’ll be prompted to add your Wi-Fi password, and link into your Garmin and Strava accounts. It’s great to see that your run data is automatically uploaded to Strava. No more plugging the watch into your computer via USB , no more uploading via Bluetooth. Everything is seamlessly uploaded, this is wireless technology at its greatest!
The Fenix 3 looks into the specific needs of trail runners and gives a dedicated trail profile. Its features include flat running vs. climbing sequences and more climbing-relevant data such as ascent performance split for laps and vertical speed. For those extreme trail runners, Fenix 3 secures additional battery life in UltraTrac mode. After testing out the Fenix 3 for a quick run, covering a 1-mile radius to see how the watch holds it’s ground. Suffice to say, it is impressive. GPS and heart rate monitor signals were picked up quickly, and the screen is clear, even in bright sunlight. The included heart rate monitor and chest strap take a little of getting used to if you have never run with one before. The accuracy is a remarkable improvement over previous models.
Fenix 3 captures essential stats from your run like time, distance and pace and is compatible with sensors such as speed, cadence and heart rate to provide advanced training capabilities for your workout. There are several cool features that help you boost your exercise regime… The virtual racer function lets you race your previous bests. Or you can use the virtual partner function and see how you measure up to a static pace you set. Fenix 3 gives you personal records so you know when you’ve hit your best times against standard distances like 1-mile or 5k. a function that is pretty similar to that of the Apple Watch .
Fenix 3 can capture your vital swim statistics, including distance, pace, stroke count and stroke rate. The drill logging feature allows you to easily log swim drills and kick sets at the pool and the two types of rest timers keep you pushing off the wall on time. Use time alerts to help you hold your pace or distance alerts to let you know when a set is over.
